Symptoms of PAWS are diverse and can include emotional dysregulation (outbursts or anhedonia), anxiety, irritability, depression, difficulty managing stress, profound fatigue (linked to low dopamine), sleep disturbances (due to serotonin/melatonin imbalances and adenosine buildup), memory and concentration problems, impaired decision-making, dizziness, and balance issues. These symptoms are a direct result of the brain's ongoing repair process, which is likened to a marathon requiring gradual rebuilding of endurance and stress tolerance. The episode emphasizes that even legal substances like nicotine, alcohol, and caffeine significantly impact brain chemistry and can lead to substantial PAWS symptoms upon cessation.
